ABOUT US and WHAT INSPIRED STORYSONGS TO BE WRITTEN

In my ten years as Oxnard Children’s Bookmobile storyteller”--in addition to several years in the classroom—my foremost goal was to read to children books that carried a worthwhile message.  Ideally a story would provide them a guiding principle to help them on their journey to becoming socially-responsible, tolerant, and compassionate throughout their lives.

Several of these stories did make a lasting impression on several of the 1900+ preschoolers we visited biweekly.  It wasn’t uncommon that a child would ask upon our return, “Teacher, would you read that story to us again and

sing that song?”

“That song” would be a StorySong with lyrics written to help children remember the positive character traits exemplified in the story.  While lyrics were inspired by the books listed on this site, these songs are meaningful by themselves.   Even today parents will come up to me and say how their kids still ask for the StorySongs CD in the car while out doing errands.

On this website you will find titles of picture books you might find welcomed additions to your own story time with children.  Since the primary language of many of the children in the preschools we would visit would be Spanish,

many of these titles were chosen because of their availability in both languages.  StorySongs were also recorded

with both English and Spanish lyrics.

And we hope these songs will also be a welcomed addition to your musical selections.
